CSE Style
CSE style was created by the Council of Biology Editors (CBE). Since 2000 it is called like Council of Science Editors. In 2006 the 7th edition of Scientific Style and Format: the CSE manual for authors, editors and publishers was published.
This style is used mostly by the students who were asked to use it by their supervisor in case of scientific work writing. The other group of users is scientists who write different articles, publications and research papers in the field of such sciences as physics, chemistry, astronomy and natural sciences.
CSE style has two types of in-text references. The first is the name-year system. While using this system you need to indicate author`s last name and the year of work publication (e.g. Crystal 2000).
The second type is the citation-sequence system. In this system you should add the number under which this work is cited in your reference list, e.g. "There are two different tendencies in the world`s linguistic order³".
In the end of the work you should have a reference list which will be of two types depending of type in-text reference you have used. In case of name-year system the reference list will be organized in alphabetical order. Otherwise the references should be cited in the order of their appearance in the text.
Both these types of reference list have several common rules:
- Begin your reference list with title "References" at the top center of the page
- Use double spaces between each reference
- The format of the reference is: Author's surname, initials. Publication date. Work title. Source title. Volume and number of pages.
In the work title you should write only the first word with capital letter. Any other words including personal names or place names should be written with small letters.
