Turabian Style
Turabian citation style is the variant of Chicago Manual of Style for research papers and references lists. The main difference is that Chicago style is used for all kinds of papers while Turabian is intended for any kinds of research papers and academic works. It was created by Kate L. Turabian in 1937. Since that time more than 8 million of guide copies were sold all over the world. In 2007 Chicago University Press published the 7th edition of this guide.
As it was mentioned before Turabian style is used for formatting of all kinds of academic works. It was created especially for this purpose and since his first publication in 1937 was changed greatly.
Turabian style is used with natural sciences, humanities and social sciences. Sometimes, when the students don't know which of styles they should use they choose Turabian as initial variant.
This style has some general requirements according to the basic formatting of the research paper. As usual, a work formatted with Turabian style should contain the following elements:
A. The first part
- Title page
- Copyright page
- Epigraph (if you have it)
- Content
- List of illustrations or other graphics
- Abstract (if needed)
B. Text part
C. Endnotes and bibliography
You need to use double space and all pages should be numbered on the top center or upper right corner. The type should be Times New Roman, 12 pt. Any page should have 1 inch margins.
As opposed to other citation styles Turabian uses specific reference style with footnotes and endnotes. Footnotes and endnotes have their own format and can be easily put in and formatted in document with Microsoft Word processor. They should be separated with the line. The footnotes are used in the bottom of the referenced page. The format of the footnotes is: Author`s surname, name, Title (Location of Press: Publisher title, year of publication), number of used page(s). The endnotes are used in the end of the paper or in the conclusion. They also should be divided with the line. The format of the endnotes is similar to footnotes.
In the end of your work you need to write a bibliography of all sources used in your work. Here you should include all sources even if you didn't reference them in your text.
The standard format of the reference list item is: Author`s surname, name. Year of work publication. Title (only first word is capitalized). Location of Publisher: Publisher Name.
